Herman and his Glasses — The Movie
The Project / Making of
This film was made by me (Bastiaan Terhorst), and Paco Vink. Paco came up with the initial concept, on which we both brainstormed. When we liked the way this was going, we sat down and merged all these small bits into a short snappy story. Paco then used his m4d drawing skillz to whip up a spiffy storyboard, which in the end we completely ignored in favor of drastic last-minute story changes.
Animating was done in a small room in the cellar of our academy. We used an old DV camera. At first we tried using coarse modeling clay because we wanted that gritty look, but that didn’t work at all. After a while we gave up and turned to regular plasticine. 2D bits were animated in Flash. The following clip illustrates some of our failures.
‘Herman’ was completely shot against a bluescreen, and all the backgrounds were made in Photoshop using photos. These were then combined with the video footage using Digital Fusion, a compositing package. The following clip shows this process.
